So You Want To Buy A Pool Table

Consider that a quality slate table is a once in a life time purchase. You should be informed of the different benefits of slate and non-slate tables. The non-slate tables have their place. They are excellent if you will be having younger children using the table as a toy. If you plan to play a serious game you will need a serious pool table; that means slate.

You will need to know if you have enough room for a proper game. You need at least 5 feet around the table to allow enough space for cue shots. In many basements there may be a tight spot or two and that can be handled with a shorter cue, but if it’s too tight all around the table it might be better to consider a smaller table.

One item that is overlooked is a good water proof table cover it plays a crucial role in adding protection to your table. This would surely protect your pool table from all types of spills, scratches and abuse.

Once the table has been installed and leveled, you have to keep it clean. The cover will protect it when not in use but while you are playing on the table there a few things to remember. Do not allow anyone to sit on the pool table, as it can cause undue stress to the rails and cushions. The felt is obviously the part of the table that is most abused. Don’t use your chalk over the felt, the chalk dust is gritty and can shorten the life. If you are going to flip a coin to decide who goes first don’t let the coin fall on the table. The edge of the coin can cut the felt. Also remember when you are brushing your felt do it with the nap.

Pool tables are not meant to be moved, but most people move at least a few times, when you have to move to a new home you will need to consider special qualified movers. They have the equipment to make sure that the table arrives intact and is set up as level as possible. Even if you don’t move it is a good idea to get a pool table mechanic to come out to check you table after about six months. Though level initially, most tables settle and become out of level especially if it has been installed on carpet. Once it has been re-leveled it should stay level for years and only need re-checking when you replace the felt.
