The Fundamentals of a Good Golf Swing

In learning golf, the fundamental movement of a good golf swing consists of bringing the club behind your head and swinging it down to hit the golf ball. After hitting the ball, the swing continues up until the golf club sits on top of the opposite shoulder.

Golf for beginners is not easy but knowing the fundamentals of a good golf swing will give you the advantage and will prevent you from developing bad habits while playing golf. Learn how to improve your game through the fundamentals of a good golf swing:

1. Grip – This is very basic since getting a good grip or strong hold on everything gives excellent performance especially for a golf swing. You must hold the club with your fingers and not with your palms. It is your index finger that plays an important role which can guide the club directly through the swings. The hands should remain steady but you should not hold on too tightly on the club as it may result in a poor shot.

2. Posture – Good posture is important in producing a good golf swing. All parts of our body play a vital role. Knee flex, hips, back, hands and arms all become an important factor. Feet should be shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent and the back straight. The hands and arms should be held loosely. Bending at the waist allows golfer to maintain good posture.

3. Pivot – There is a proper position for a good pivot turn. Pivot is how you rotate your body during the swing. In learning golf, a good pivot is important in making a good hit on the ball. The best pivot is a basic weight shift from one side to the other. You use this weight shift to push the ball forward.

4. Back Swing and Forward swing – There are two parts of a golf swing: the first part is the back swing and the second part, the forward swing. When doing the backswing, you take your grip, set yourself up and your hands in the club and then swing it behind your shoulders. While with the forward swing, you take your arms and you just swing the club at your target.

Yonex Voltric 80 Badminton Racquet Review

I am in love…let me introduce you to Yonex’s new flagship racquet, the Voltric 80.

This racquet was launched at 2011 All England Badminton Championships, where it proved to be a real winner on court through Mens Singles Winner Lee Chong Wei, and Mens Doubles Winner Mathias Boe (his partner used VT70).

In my review of VT70 I raved about the new technology and design and said that Yonex had really got it right with this series of badminton racquets. In my opinion, somehow Yonex have managed to go one better with VT80 as it’s got a lot more to give.

The Voltric arrived in a full length bag, which is now standard for the Voltric range. Yonex have continued to improve on the graphics and this racquet is very striking in red, black, white and gold. It’s looks so much better than VT70.

This particular model is only available in 3U (weight 84-89g) in UK, and grip size G4 which is the smaller of the grip sizes usually on offer in UK.

This is a remarkable racquet in terms of what it’s meant to do. In essence, Yonex have combined the aerodynamic qualities of a Z Slash with the thin frame of a Nanospeed 9900 (not as thin as VT70, although the shaft is the slimmest in Yonex range) and given the racquet the head weight of an Armortec. Ingenious. We already know the technology works from my review of VT70, so how much better can this racquet be?

Balance wise, this is a head heavy racquet, but certainly not as heavy as AT700. I’d say this is very close to the weight on Armortec 900 Power which is therefore why Lee Chong Wei likes the racquet.

This racquet has a thin but stiff shaft which appears to be slightly longer than conventional racquets by around 1cm, which is very similar to Z Slash. This should therefore have a broader appeal to players especially fans of Armortec 900 who are looking for more from their racquet.

The frame is certainly thin although I’d say it’s an even size rather than the super thin with bulges we witnessed on Voltric 70. Yet again, the weight is at the top of the head. This racquet also has the sound filters although to my mind they don’t add anything to your performance.

Boxing Gloves

How to choose a glove?

We would like to provide you with a simple guide as to how to choose your boxing gloves. This will be great for a beginner who needs a good starting point. Purchasing your boxing equipment and in particular your gloves can be a difficult decision especially for the first time buyer. There are a range of brands, colours, and weights to choose from, so what is right for you?

Brands

Like any apparel item you have your premium brands such as Cleto Reyes, as well as brands that sell both premium and cost-effective gloves such as Adidas and Lonsdale boxing gloves. Despite there being a considerable price difference, if you are planning to box on a regular basis (2 times a week) then it is worth investing in leather boxing gloves which tend to be more expensive. If you are training in various other boxing disciplines such as kickboxing or Mauy Thai then a brand such as Twins will be best suited. We have previously blogged about Twins gloves and how people use them for classic boxing too. They are a great all round glove especially if you are after support, protection and hard-wearing.

Glove Weights

The weight of the glove depends on what you intend to use the glove for. The heavier the weight, the more padding, the harder it is to throw punches, the tougher the workout you get. If you are doing all round boxing training you would opt for 14oz or 16oz boxing glove. Women may opt for a 10oz or 12oz boxing glove. When sparring you usually use a 16oz glove to protect the fighters from injury.

Choice of Colours

The colour of your glove depends on your boxing style. If you are a flashy ‘Pretty Boy’ Floyd Mayweather then go for a bright white, or if you are a raw brawler like Ricky ‘Hitman’ Hatton, then go for a mean black. Obviously this part has no effect on effectiveness of your glove, however it could play a psychological role in your fights and potentially work in your favor.
